Dress Etiquette Part Four - Three Major Taboos in Suit Wearing

When it comes to formal occasions, the suit is an essential item for men, and attention to detail in its wear is crucial. Here are three common mistakes in suit wearing that not only impact personal image but may also give others an unprofessional impression.

1.  Failure to Remove Sleeve Tag:
When purchasing a new suit, there is typically a small tag on the left sleeve cuff indicating the brand or washing instructions. This tag needs to be cut off before the first wear. Failing to remove this tag gives the impression that the clothing is not fully prepared, leaving a sense of incompleteness. Therefore, ensuring to check and remove this part before attending any important event is essential.

2.  Improper Tie and Shirt Pairing:
While wearing a jacket or short-sleeved shirt with a tie may be acceptable in certain casual settings (such as internal company meetings), it is not appropriate for more formal occasions or external communication. The correct approach is to choose a long-sleeved shirt to pair with a tie, showcasing respect for others and attention to one's professional image.

3.  Incorrect Sock Selection:
Avoid White and Nylon Materials:
When wearing dark-colored suits, it is advisable to avoid using light-colored, especially pure white, socks as they can easily peek out from under the trouser leg, disrupting overall coordination. Additionally, socks made of nylon material are unsuitable for business settings due to poor breathability and odor issues. On the contrary, socks made of natural fibers like cotton or wool are better choices.

Color Matching Principle:
Ideally, the color of the socks should match the shoes or at least be close to the color of the trousers. This creates a coherent and smooth visual effect, making one appear more refined and meticulous. Furthermore, for those with a conservative dressing style, dark colors are always a safer choice.

Maintain Good Condition:
Last but equally important, ensure that the socks you wear are in good condition—free of holes or other visible damage. Even the slightest flaw can draw attention and affect your overall image in the eyes of others.

In conclusion, by paying attention to the points above, you can better showcase your professionalism and personal taste, leaving a profound and positive first impression in any formal setting.
